I was invited by my good buddy Kyle Chambers for a chinwag on the “climate change” addendum to ISO 9001.

Chris,
We just had our re-registration audit from Perry Johnson 2 weeks ago when I learned about the amendment. Like you, I’m mystified that ISO decided to put this requirement in a QMS standard rather than a more appropriate one. Our auditor explained his rationale which at least made a little sense to me and went like this – there are multiple standards that use ISO 9001 as the base and then add their special requirements, e.g., IATF16949. Adding climate change consideration to ISO 9001 made incorporation of it a much simpler task. That doesn’t mean that I still don’t question the encumbering of a QMS standard with a climate change requirement but at least I understand the logic from a simplification perspective.
As was mentioned in the podcast, I’m very concerned that ISO 9001 will become more politicized with future changes and have already started talking with my company’s owners about the possibility of letting our ISO 9001 registration lapse, IF our customers can live with that. Btw, Q001 would be the standard that I would recommend that we go to as a replacement.
