Winter Haven FL — Oxebridge Quality Resources International is preparing a comprehensive ISO 9001 implementation book for those seeking a “do-it-yourself” approach to implementing the standard in their organizations.

Written by Oxebridge founder and US TAG to TC 176 former member Christopher Paris, the “dummies” style book will be offered for free through the Oxebridge website. “We had planned a packaged “Do It Yourself Rapid ISO 9001 Program” for years, but our significant client work always interrupted the development of that project. That project would have been an item made for purchase, but this new approach better fits our ‘Do What’s Right’ policy, while being faster to produce.”

Other ISO experts and US TAG members have published such guides for as much as $90 for a hardcopy edition. Worsening matters, such authors often release multiple “editions”, updating them every year or so, inferring that readers should buy multiple editions of the same book to stay current. “I’ve never liked that approach, to release a book on how to implement a draft version of ISO 9001, and then updating the book once the standard is ratified. It’s just a typical consultant approach to rake in additional revenue, and gives ISO 9001 consultants a bad name,” says Paris.

To date Wiley Publishers, the publishers of the “For Dummies” line of books, has never published an “ISO 9001 for Dummies” edition. “Our intent is not to infringe on their copyright, which is why our book will be called ‘ISO 9001 for Normal People’, but it is technically the same approach. The world is in desperate need of a solid guide on making ISO 9001 implementation simple for both manufacturing and service organizations. But we will not profit from it.”

Online publication of the book will be offered as a free PDF download, with possible release under the Copyleft licensing rules, giving readers the right to freely redistribute the document so long as the material is not altered. “We are exploring this open-source method of publication distribution,” Paris says, “but have not made a final decision on Copyleft. There may be another model we may use, but in any case the document will be made freely available, and will include templates for certain key forms and documents.”

Why offer a free book that would compete with its own ISO 9001 services? “Oxebridge has done better analysis of the penetration of ISO 9001 in the North American market than anyone, and that penetration is statistically insignificant. There are literally millions of potential user organizations in the US alone that could — and should — benefit from ISO 9001. Adding this book will in no way slow down our growth in the market, since the market is, at this time, almost limitless. Anyone who says the iSO 9001 market is saturated does not have the data to support the claim, because the dramatic opposite is true.”

Oxebridge targets May 2010 as a publication date.

Why we report on these topics

Since 2000, Oxebridge has worked to improve ISO and related certification schemes by identifying problems and then proposing solutions. We report on issues affecting standards users because so few other news outlets do. Our belief is that in order to fix the problems in these schemes, we must first understand the nature and breadth of those problems. Our reporting aims to do just that. Elsewhere on the Oxebridge site you will find White Papers and other articles proposing ideas to correct these problems.
