Pittsburgh PA — Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute (SEI) has released an official document comparing the requirements of the ISO 9001 with the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI). The document, entitled An Initial Comparative Analysis of the CMMI Version 1.2 Development
Constellation and the ISO 9000 Family, is available for free PDF download from SEI, using this link.
The document is the result of over four years of work by members of the US Technical Advisory Group to ISO Technical Committee 176 (TAG 176), the authors of ISO 9001, and others in the software engineering field.
Oxebridge played a small, if critical, role in the launching of this effort. At a TAG 176 meeting in August of 2005, Oxebridge VP Operations Christopher Paris proposed that the group work on a crosswalk document, to be officially released by ISO, which would assist companies that were struggling with the implementation of both ISO 9001 and CMMI. The idea was endorsed by Jack West, the Chairman of the TAG 176 at that time, and a formal breakout session arranged to begin planning the activity. Mr. Paris attended the first breakout session, but did not contribute in an active capacity as he did not have direct CMMI or software engineering experience. The group was led instead by Alka Jarvis, who now chairs the TAG 176, John Walz and Venkat Gopalan. Over the last four years, the major contributors of the document’s content shifted to Mr. Walz, alongside David Kitson, Robert Vickroy and Dave Wynn.
Ultimately the document was published by SEI, the developer of CMMI, and not ISO.
