The upcoming revision to AS9100, to be rebranded as “IA9100,” will have “frequent, smaller updates” according to a newsletter published by PRI, the administrators of the Nadcap special process accreditation program.
PRI released a brief news summary on “Major updates to ISO and Aerospace Standards” that included the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it claim, while admitting that PRI is “waiting for more information about the changes“:
Unlike ISO, publisher SAE and developer IAQG are not required to wait for international consensus or ISO member voting to release an update to their aerospace standards.
The notion of “frequent, smaller updates” may raise challenges for AS9100-certified companies, who will have to implement changes as they are released, potentially moving the goalposts for conformity at a greater frequency.
PRI also announced that AS9104/1 will be updated as IA9104/1, and will introduce new requirements for AS9100 certification bodies. This includes: verifying on-time delivery, customer satisfaction, and quality at all future audits; recalculating the minimum audit duration; and yet another attempt to redefine “campus” structures for companies with more than one facility. IAQG has struggled with the latter issue, having already made two or three changes to “campus” considerations with each update of AS9104/1.
IAQG has largely ignored end-user feedback on the AS standards, recognizing only its member “aerospace primes” as customers for AS9100 certification. As a result, companies disagreeing with the IAQG’s approach are left without any means of pushback.
The PRI publication also claimed that ISO 9001:2026 will be published at the end of 2026, not earlier as originally planned, and that IA9100 is then likely to be released “Mid 2027.”
For ISO 9001, a three-year transition period is expected, meaning companies will have to the fourth quarter of 2029 to implement the changes; however, IAQG has not announced its transition period, which is likely to be less than three years if the group intends on more frequent updates.
