In order to help companies understand what Paris calls the “vague non-requirements of RBT,” he will be presenting a step-by-step method for interpreting the requirements and converting them into real-world, practical approaches.

In contrast to other approaches presented to date, Paris advocates for maintaining a robust preventive action system, and not replacing it with typical risk management approaches. Instead, he argues, the risk approaches must be carefully tailored for the organization and its processes, while existing side-by-side with traditional preventive action activities. “The two are not mutually exclusive,” Paris says.

The workshop also provides methods for converting the intellectual concept of “risk-based thinking” into practical tasks and actions which will benefit the company, without adding needless documentation or expense, and which go beyond using FMEA as the go-to risk tool. The class includes practical implementation of the new requirements related to “context of the organization” as well.

Step One: The “COTO Exercise” – defining the context of the organization: interested parties, issues of concern, and scoping of the QMS

Step Two: Re-Examining the Process Approach – ensuring your processes are well defined

Step Three: Defining Risk and Opportunity – applying your own tailored definitions and interpretations of the terms

Step Four: Practical Risk Based Thinking – putting it all together so that risks and opportunities are defined and acted upon, using the best tools and methods for each particular context.

Attendees will come away with a better understanding of how to address the requirements for RBT and COTO, in a practical manner that allows them to return back to their organizations and get to work on these subjects without hesitation or confusion. They will learn some pitfalls and expected problems which can be avoided by tailoring their approach to RBT, which will be unique for each organization.

The event is part of a two-day Quality Conference hosted by ASQ San Diego, and sponsored by Hologics Inc.
