As expected, the United Nations has listed its final set of candidates for its upcoming Secretary-General elections, and ISO Sec-Gen Sergio Mujica’s name isn’t on the list. It wasn’t even close.<\/p>\n
Surprisingly, Mujica’s former boss — Chile’s former president Michelle Bachelet — didn’t make the list, either. If she<\/strong> <\/em>didn’t get it, then Mujica never had a shot.<\/p>\n Mujica has rebranded the International Organization for Standardization as a de facto political<\/strong> <\/em>organization now, positioning it as the procedural enforcement arm for the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. As the UN rolled out its SDGs, Mujica dutifully ensured they were incorporated into ISO standards, thus shifting entire economies and world trade to adopt the UN’s political positions.<\/p>\n But Mujica only went so far. He selected the “easier” SDGs to embrace, leaving out the tough ones — like ensuring living wages for all and stopping child sex trafficking — off the ISO table. Mujica’s ISO only embraces raw, unfettered capitalism and isn’t serious about anything that might upset the oligarchs. (Mujica has refused to distance himself from Vladimir Putin, for example.)<\/p>\n Mujica did much of this in order to set himself up for the role of UN Secretary-General, but that was never going to work. He had been criminally investigated in his home country of Chile for drug trafficking and money laundering while he ran that nation’s customs ministry. Apparently, the case was only dropped after he left the Chilean government and (ironically) took over the role at ISO.<\/p>\n But ISO’s current rules say that Mujica needs to step down this year. With no UN position to land on now, all signs point to Mujica simply making himself ISO Secretary-General for Life, and not stepping down at all.<\/p>\n That move would actually be fairly simple. The ISO Sec-Gen can simply tell the ISO Executive to change the procedures and, overnight, it would be done.
