{"id":26525,"date":"2022-05-30T00:20:56","date_gmt":"2022-05-30T04:20:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.oxebridge.com\/emma\/?p=26525"},"modified":"2022-05-30T00:20:56","modified_gmt":"2022-05-30T04:20:56","slug":"europes-largest-co2-emitter-holds-iso-14001-environmental-certification-from-tuv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oxebridge.com\/emma\/europes-largest-co2-emitter-holds-iso-14001-environmental-certification-from-tuv\/","title":{"rendered":"Europe&#8217;s Largest CO2 Emitter Holds ISO 14001 Environmental Certification from TUV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>German energy company RWE holds ISO 14001 certification attesting to its environmental management system, despite being labeled &#8220;Europe&#8217;s largest CO2 emitter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to ClientEarth:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In 2017, RWE was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyond-coal.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/EBC_RWE_briefing_paper.pdf\">ranked<\/a>\u00a0as Europe\u2019s biggest CO2 emitter and as the worst\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/6fefcbb86e61af1b2fc4-c70d8ead6ced550b4d987d7c03fcdd1d.ssl.cf3.rackcdn.com\/cms\/reports\/documents\/000\/001\/881\/original\/Utilities-exec-summary-2017.pdf?1490974742\">positioned<\/a>\u00a0of the 14 largest European power companies for low-carbon transition. The company has since reduced its overall power plant emissions from 131.8 million tonnes of CO2 in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.group.rwe\/-\/media\/RWE\/documents\/05-investor-relations\/2017-Q4\/RWE-annual-report-2017.pdf\">2017<\/a>\u00a0to 68.9 million tonnes in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.group.rwe\/-\/media\/RWE\/documents\/05-investor-relations\/2020-Q4\/2021-03-16-rwe-annual-report-2020.pdf?la=en&amp;hash=4293F061F0FFB3CFA764560CBF403024\">2020<\/a>, largely by reducing coal power operations and, for 2020, in light of reduced demand under COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>However, it continues to mine and burn brown coal, an energy source which is disastrous for the climate, and refuses to phase out coal power by the time experts\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climateanalytics.org\/briefings\/coal-phase-out\/\">say<\/a>\u00a0is necessary for climate goals \u2013 2030. RWE\u2019s mining activities also are responsible for the expropriation of local communities. An increase in greenhouse gases has caused glaciers to melt, raising the waters of Lake Palcacocha. The lake now appears ready to burst local dams, threatening the city of Huaraz in the valley below. German judges are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/may\/27\/peru-lake-palcacocha-climate-crisis-lawsuit\">visiting Peru<\/a> to assess the veracity of these claims.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, RWE holds multiple ISO 14001 certificates issued by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuev-nord.de\/en\/company\/certification\/\">TUV NORD<\/a>. Those certificates attest that RWE has implemented environmental management system controls. The certificate lists multiple RWE plants around the world as part of the scope of its certification.<\/p>\n<p>TUV NORD&#8217;s website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuev-nord.de\/en\/company\/certification\/iso-14001-emas\/\">claims<\/a> that &#8220;<em>certification according to the internationally recognised Standard ISO 14001 offers independent confirmation of a responsible approach to the environment.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The certificate is accredited by the German accreditation body DAkkS, a member of the International Accreditation Forum (IAF).<\/p>\n<p>TUV NORD is currently under investigation for allowing its Saudi operations to be run by a consulting firm, in violation of IAF rules and world accreditation standards.
