Surrey Satellite’s US Division Pursues AS9100

Englewood CO — The US division of Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd., a UK designer and manufacturer of small satellites, has contracted with Oxebridge to provide AS9100 implementation in 2010.

Surrey Satellite Technology US LLC (SST-US LLC) was formed in 2008, to present an American footprint for the international parent company. The UK organization first launched a satellite with NASA in 1981 and has since flew over 30 satellites across five continents, more satellites than any other private company. The US division, located in Colorado, is currently ramping up operations, and will conduct both design and manufacture of small satellites for a variety of US and international customers. The company offers post-launch support as well.

The exact AS9100 implementation timeline for SST US is being developed, but a 2010 certification by an accredited AS9100 registrar is expected. Oxebridge has aggressively pursued the private spaceflight industry, having implemented ISO 9001 for Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX), which is currently undergoing an AS9100 upgrade. Oxebridge donated a percentage of its profits to the X-Prize Foundation for the Anasari X-Prize, which was eventually won by Scaled Composites in 2004. Oxebridge’s VP Operations, Christopher Paris, visited the Scaled Composites assembly plant in Mojave CA that year.

“With Surrey Satellite’s US organization on board, we continue our push to promote private space development,” Mr. Paris said. “Oxebridge is firmly committed to supporting both NASA and private suppliers, partners and even competitors, in order to ensure a robust US space program far into the future.”

Oxebridge is currently working with Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) to implement AS9100 in a number of its subcontractor organizations in support of the NASA Stennis Space Center, under a CSC mentor-protege program. The first protege company Oxebridge has worked with, NVision Solutions of Bay St. Louis MS, is set to undergo its AS9100 audit in December 2009.

SST US’ implementation of AS9100 is expected to begin in January 2010. A decision on the third party registrar selected will be announced soon.
